Anorexia
, treatment at Mayo Clinic between WWI & WWII
Following research of Mayo nephew John Mayo Berkman, Mayo Clinic physicians defined and treated anorexia nervosa as a general metabolic disorder as determined by basal metabolism rate (BMR). Correlating thyroid insufficiency and a low BMR, they recommended replacement therapy (administration of thyroxin or desiccated thyroid) to increase metabolic activity, coordinate with steady regimen of increased nourishment (Brumberg, 208-212).
