Baer

, William, empathy of

In summer of 1900, prior to establishment of orthopedic clinic at Hopkins, Baer spent the summer at the orthopedic service at MGH, where many children had to wear plaster casts in the hot weather: “Doctor Baer himself wore a body cast all that summer. His sole object was to try in this way to gain the children’s confidence by showing them that he too was enduring the same discomfort” (Crowe, 130-31).
