Billroth

, C. A. Theodor, as an operator

“On familiar ground, his operative methods were rapid and summary, though always safe; but when, as a pioneer, he invaded an unexplored field, he was deliberate, always prepared by previous animal experiments, and provided with a well laid plan or procedure. Nothing could shake his cool and tranquil self-possession. Hemorrhage, asphyxia, or any of the serious accidents at the operating table were always met and overcome without a flutter of excitement. He was an indefatigable worker. . . . he was a masterful pianist. His friendships with Brahms and Hanslick were based on their common love of the art” (Gerster, 120,121).
