The common conception was of gasses emanating from the womb in women and upper abdomen in men rose to the brain and filled it with strange ideas that provoked bizarre behavior. Aristocratic and bourgeois women thought to be especially prone owing to strong emotions as well as unrestrained or repressed sexuality (L. Wilson, loc 879-882).
