“The Academy of Medicine was the ultimate ‘old boys’ club. But as we have seen . . . medical journalists could exert a certain amount of power, could have a constraining effect upon what happened in the Academy. The press could and did impose certain rules on the game. Medical journalists could function as gatekeepers, referees, disciplining the ‘scientific tournaments’ within the Academy from their vantage point outside the Academy.
