Beginning in late 1890s, “the problem of ineffective illumination lessened as electric lights were installed in operating rooms. . . . [By early 20th century] A hospital’s employment of technology, particularly for surgeries, is best explained in one word: ‘electrification’” (Rutkow, 172-173).
