Flexner Report and black medical colleges

“Neither Flexner nor the white philanthropists who followed his advice believed in making medical schools for blacks the equal of medical schools for white. While white schools should focus on scientific medicine and research, Howard and Meharry should focus on sanitation and hygiene (Ward, 26, cf. 33). . . . A greater appreciation of the needs of black communities for professional medical care . . . might have led to a more sympathetic attitude toward some of the other black medical colleges, especially Flint and Leonard [in Raleigh, NC], schools that proved they could produce excellent physicians and were strategically located in regions of needy black populations” (30).
