Harkens

, Dwight, use of index finger in early mitral valvuloplasty

Harken cut off the index finger of his glove “in order to expose his specially prepared fingernail. The nail was allowed to grow long and it was then trimmed in an offset fashion similar to the blade of a carpenter’s knife. Furthermore, tiny notches were cut into the free edge, converting the fingernail to a miniature saw. His was a ‘Swiss Army fingernail,’ which could be used to part the commissure by direct pressure or by cutting” (Collins, 210).
