Harvey

, William

How 17th c. physicians integrated his discovery of circulation with Galen: “You’d think phlebotomy, for example, would have gone out of the window along with Galen, but physicians simply crammed Harvey’s theory into existing models. They convinced themselves that because blood constantly circulates, it was of even greater importance than they first thought. So, they assigned to it many of the properties they’d previously ascribed to other humours and bled their patients still more” (Craddock, 58-59).
