1872: Spencer Wells used small arterial clips to close of blood flow during surgical procedures = intro of bloodless surgery; 1873: Esmarch invented the Esmarch elastic bandage, which served as a battle tourniquet; 1879: Halsted invented the modern hemostat (Gabriel, 136).
