Koch
, Robert, major contributions from 1880
“Koch’s innovations and contributions to the emerging science of bacteriology during the next few years were remarkable. In studying anthrax he had developed the hanging drop culture technique and taken the first photomicrographs of bacteria. He went on to invent the method of steam sterilization. He worked in partnership with Ernst Abbe at Carl Zeiss, the famous lens makers, and he was the first to use oil immersion lenses and the new substage optical condenser developed by Abbe. Koch showed that staphylococci and streptococci . . . were causes of wound infections. He developed solid culture media that for the first time allowed the culture of pure strains of bacteria” (Daniel, 78).
