“In 1836 John Pereira  wrote, ‘The consumption of leeches must be enormous.’ He pointed out that, collectively, the four largest London dealers imported, on average, 600,000 leeches monthly or 7,200,000 a year. Most of these imports came from France, Germany, Silesia, and Poland (Carter, 41).
