Slaves in American South were not immunized against smallpox “because this might leave marks on their bodies that could discourage buyers” when brought to auction. Similarly, greying beards and hair of aging slaves were “blacked” on the auction block to convey youthful fitness for labor (Montgomery, 64-65).
