Waterloo
, Battle of, as medical disaster
As late as 11 days after the 9-hr. battle, casualties were still waiting for treatment. British had dismantled their medical service a year earlier, and they had no medical support at all & no wagons set aside as ambulances, no litter bearers. British & French had 56,700 casualties between them. Wellington’s entire army of 60,000 had only 273 medical officers in toto, with no system of triage (unlike Larrey’s) and regimental hospitals designed to handle only 60 casualties (Gabriel, 150-151).
