German anatomist Samuel Thomas Sömmering, an accomplished artist who studied medicine at the University of University of Göttingen, names in his doctoral thesis the 12 pairs of cerebral nerves upon which the modern cranial nerve nomenclature is based. He matched textual descriptions with clear, persuasive illustrations (C. E. Storey).
