After 1865, “pharmacists turned more and more to wholesalers for their prescription ingredients and less to their own laboratories. . . .”Antagonism between the small-scale practitioners who wrote the standards and the large-scale manufacturers who made most drug preparations reduced the effectiveness of the Pharmacopoeia during the 1860s and 1870s (95).
