Publication of Wm. Stokes’s Diagnosis and Treatment of Diseases of the Chest, which built on Laennec, included an exhaustive discussion of bronchitis as a key to thoracic pathology, and propounded use of stethoscope as an aid to detecting foreign bodies in the air passages (Stokes, 64-72).
