Crawford Long first operative use of ether via inhalation to remove two neck tumors from James Venable; James Braid discovers hypnotism (“nervous sleep”) in Manchester and employs it during confinements (Fulop-Miller, 99-105; 360-62). Charles Clay of Manchester performs his first successful ovariotomy via the long incision and long ligature and is criticized by Liston and others (Shepherd[2], 42-45).
