James Paget, age 33, elected Assistant Surgeon of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital and Professor of Anatomy and Surgery to Royal College of Surgeons (Paget, 135-138), though he had yet to do a single operation in private practice (155).  Semmelweis begins his two-year appointment as assistant in obstetrics at Vienna’s Allgemeine Krankenhaus (Nuland, 83ff.).
