Founding of Friedrich Bayer Company; Bayer developed acetanilide, a derivative of coal-tar, as first synthetic antipyretic (fever-reducing) drug (Antifebrin) and then in 1887, Bayer began to manufacture phenacetin, which eventually became more successful as an analgesic-antipyretic agent than acetanilide (A. Jones, 341).
