Morell Mackenzie founded his clinic, “Metropolitan Free Dispensary for Diseases of the Throat and Loss of Voice” in London. James Paget told him “he might as well found a Hospital for Diseases of the Great Toe.” During early years, many cases of chronic laryngeal disease were tuberculous; over 10% (probably underestimated) were syphilis of the throat (Stevenson [2], 35-37).
