Another virulent yellow fever epidemic beginning in New Orleans and spreading along the Rio Grande; Matas sent to Brownsville-Matamoros by Dr. Chaillé to assist. In Brownsville, he met and cared for Dr. William Crawford Gorgas, destined to be the “conqueror of yellow fever” in Cuba and Panama by mastering sanitation via mosquito eradication (Cohn, 146-150).
