Cholera epidemic from India to Egypt sends French (under Pasteur) and German (under Koch) expeditions to Egypt to discover the bacteria. German team proceeds to Calcutta, India, where Koch isolates cholera vibrio (the “comma bacillus”) in January1884 (Brock, 140-168; Down, 107). Ernst Jacobi, seven-year-old son of Abraham Jacobi and Mary Putnam Jacobi, dies of diphtheria in NYC (Hammonds, 29-30).
