S.S. Massilia docks at New York Harbor on January 30, with brief inspection of over 800 Russian Jews at quarantine station off Staten Island; immigrants had been forced to spend three months in typhus-infested districts of Constantinople  typhus fever epidemic in NY’s lower east side, with draconian quarantining in “typhus houses” and then Riverside Hospital on North Brother Island, the city lazaretto (Markel, chaps 1 & 2).
