Massilia docks at New York Harbor on January 30, with brief inspection of over 800 Russian Jews at quarantine station off Staten Island; immigrants had been forced to spend three months in typhus-infested districts of Constantinople typhus fever epidemic in NY’s lower east side, with draconian quarantining in “typhus houses” and then Riverside Hospital on North Brother Island, the city lazaretto (Markel, chaps 1 & 2).
