Crile begins using cocaine for tracheotomy and laryngectomy, and other minor operations; in 1897, performs first amputation under cocaine (Crile I, 80-81). Hunter Robb, at Hopkins, recommends that surgeon himself wear rubber gloves (Davis, 76).
