Willem Einthoven, Dutch physiologist, provides first published description of his string galvanometer type of electrocardiograph, which was used chiefly in large hospitals and research laboratories (Burnett, 61-62; Reiser, 107-108). First commercial model, built by Cambridge Scientific Instrument Company, was sold to E. A. Schafer of Edinburgh University in January, 1908 (Burnett, 53, 64 ).
