Carl Fischer patents a more potent derivative of barbituric acid, synthesized by Adolf von Baeyer in 1904n Veronal (barbital), and he and von Mering conducted and published clinical trials with barbital as a sleeping aid (Jones, 340-1). This was the first commercially available barbiturate.
