Hungarian surgeon Hümér Hultl constructs a heavy stapling machine that can simultaneously insert a row of staples in intestinal tissue, a solution to the problem of intestinal joins. It was used in Eastern Europe, but not in the West until 1960s (Van de Laar, ch 26).
