Frederick Twort describes ability of certain viruses to lyse bacteria (bacterial viruses) (bacteriophage); independently discovered in 1917 by Felix d’Herelle of Pasteur Institute and applied therapeutically by d’Herelle in 1917. After promising animal experiments, d’Herelle administered phages to patients with bacillary dysentery in France in 1921 (Wainwright, 105-107; Ho, 1-5).
