Wilhelm Roehl, associate of Ehrlich, working at Bayer lab at Elberfeld, discovers Germanin, an azo dye derivative, first treatment for sleeping sickness (trypanosomiasis) (F. Ryan, 90-91). In 1924, Roehl, working with Bayer chemist Fritz Schönhöfer, distilled Plasmoquin, which was 30 times more effective against malaria than quinine (91).
