Opening of Rockefeller-funded Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, headed by Welch (Flexner, 358ff.). James Mackenzie retires from his London practice as a consultant cardiologist and returns to Scotland (St. Andrews), where, in 1919, he founds the Mackenzie Institute for Medical Research (Mair, 291ff.).
