On October 4, Freud undergoes first of three operations for maxillary jawbone cancer by Austrian surgeon Hans Pichler (Stepansky I, 132ff.) Freud was subsequently dependent on Pichler for ongoing adjustments of his large jaw prosthesis (140-145).
