First year pneumonia no longer leading cause of death in U.S. (Barry, 152). Colebrook and his team at Queen Charlotte’s Hospital in London successfully use Prontosil (sulfanilamide) to treat puerperal infections caused by hemolytic streptococci; a year later it successfully treated erysipelas (Dowling, 109-110) and was shortly thereafter shown to be effective with pneumococcal pneumonia (113-14) and meningococcal meningitis (114-116).
