Leo Kanner publishes seminal article on autism, “Autistic Disturbance of Affective Contact,” in The Nervous Child. Based on observations of 11 children since 1938, it defined the diagnosis in terms of: children’s social withdrawal, restricted emotional relationships, repetitive language and behavioral, limited speech, preoccupation with objects, and preference for routine” (Sheffer, 59).
