Sanford Palay at Rockefeller University, using electron microscopy, publishes first reports on fine structure of the synapse – including the vesicles on the presynaptic (axonal) side of nerve endings in which neurotransmitters are manufactured and stored -- confirming Cajal’s deductions (Rapport, 171, 173, 177).
