NCI launches VAMP trials (high-dose, life-threatening, four-drug combination therapy) for childhood leukemia. After initial remission, 95% of patients relapsed with leukemia cells colonizing the brain, as the blood-brain barrier directed the leukemia cells to the nervous system as the one place unreachable by chemotherapy (Mukherjee, 143-150).
