AMA reluctantly supports the Health Professions Education Assistance Act, which acknowledged the doctor shortage and extended direct federal support to medical schools. Then, in 1966, the AMA established the Citizen’s Commission on Graduate Medical Education, chaired by John Millis, which recommended central coordination of all graduate medical education (Stephens, 78).
