Presentation of gate control theory (of pain) by Melzack and Wall; it proposed “that a gate-like mechanism exists in the somatic transmission system, allowing pain signals to be modulated before they evoke perception and responsive. The gate can be opened or closed by variable amounts, depending on factors such as relative activity in large and small peripheral nerve fibers, and various psychological processes such as attention and prior experience” (Baszanger, 122).
