Establishment of certifying board of family practice, which administered its first certifying examinations in 1970 (Stevens, 313), and had no “grandfathering” and mandatory recertification from the beginning. By 1978, there were 342 FP residency programs with ca. 5,500 residents (Stephens, 79).
