Richard Smith at University of Washington develops MEDEX program for military corpsmen returning from Vietnam; it was intended to place students in underserved areas before they graduated and included a matching plan that paired students with practicing physicians who urgently needed help (Fairman II, 106). MECEX program was more successful than Physician Assistant (PA) programs in meeting needs of underserved rural and urban communities (106-107).
