David Kuhn (University of Pennsylvania) realized that the image-retrieving formulas (first an iterative algorithm and later Fourier transforms) that worked to reconstruct a slice with transmission tomography would also work for emission tomography (tracking radioactive source within), leading to PETT (positron emission transaxial tomography) paper published with Phelps in 1975.
