Stanley Cohen proposes the word “cytokine” as an umbrella term for the proliferating number of cells of the immune system that communicate with each other when aroused. He defined cytokine as “the family of molecules manufactured and secreted by a variety of cells engaged in immunological or inflammatory responses” (Hall, 176).
