Baruch Blumberg and team devised vaccine for hepatic B virus (HBV), which caused an inflammation in liver cells that, in turn, caused liver cancer: “Blumberg had thus made a critical link from cause to prevention. He had identified a viral carcinogen, found a method to detect it before transmission, then found a means to thwart transmission” (Mukherjee, 281).
