Norman Shumway, with fellow surgeon Bruce Reitz, perform first heart-lung transplant, with FDA granting permission to use the immunosuppressant cyclosporin to prevent rejection. The recipient, Mary Gohlke, lived five years and autopsy showed no evidence of rejection (Chaddock, 245).
