Birth of Avicenna near Bukhara in what is now northern Afghanistan. After reading Plato, Aristotle, and Ptolemy, he took up medicine at age 13, began treating patients at 16, and was summoned to help treat emir of Bukhara, whom he cured after his own physicians had given up hope of recovery (Abu-Asab, et al., Intro).
